Olliers virtual intern evening for A-Level students

Written 29th November 2024 by Olliers Solicitors

We are delighted to announce that Olliers will be hosting a ‘virtual intern evening’ on the evening of Monday, 20th January 2025 from 6 pm to 8 pm on Teams. The evening is intended for A-Level students (Year 12 or 13) and it is designed to offer an opportunity to understand criminal defence as a career, the reality of life as a criminal solicitor and the various methods of qualification as a solicitor.

At Olliers we hold an annual Summer Internship Programme over the summer months offering weeklong paid internships at our Manchester office. However, these are for undergraduate students, and we are not in a position to offer placements to younger A-Level students. In September 2024 we held an inaugural virtual internship day again for graduates and were amazed to see the number of applicants who applied for the same. The event proved extremely successful, and we were delighted so many interns attended virtually.

However, weekly we receive numerous emails from younger students who are studying at college or sixth form and are looking to obtain work experience with us. We appreciate how difficult it is to obtain work experience unless you have a family member or close family friend working within the legal field. Accordingly, we wanted to be able to offer some form of alternative experience to these younger students.

What will the evening look like?

We want to offer a glimpse of how a criminal defence law firm works as well as the various career options open to them. The evening will be held virtually on Teams and will comprise a mix of keynote speakers and question and answer sessions.

The evening aims to address the following;

  • What a criminal solicitor does on a day-to-day basis
  • How you become a solicitor – the different routes to qualification
  • What sort of qualities do you need to have to become a good criminal solicitor
  • Building your own personal brand

The evening will include content from our Managing Director Matthew Claughton, various senior lawyers at Olliers, associate solicitors, trainee solicitors, paralegals and other members of the team

Who should apply?

We are seeking motivated and passionate students who are eager to learn and make a difference in the field of criminal defence.

Ideally candidates will;

  1. Be an A-Level student (Year 12 or Year 13)
  2. Demonstrate a keen interest in law and considering a career in criminal law
  3. Possess excellent research, analytical and writing skills
