Olliers’ client acquitted after fraud trial lasting 154 days

Written 31st January 2025 by Matthew Corn

An Olliers client was found not guilty by a jury in Newcastle Crown Court yesterday after 20 days of jury deliberation and on day 154 of the fraud trial.

The trial had overrun by some considerable weeks, having started in May. The client was charged with a conspiracy to defraud in what was said to be a sophisticated and complex pension liberation fraud. The client was understandably delighted with the outcome and felt vindicated having always maintained his innocence of the charge he faced.

The client had in fact been originally interviewed in 2018 about this case and had to wait for another 4 ½ years before he was charged, only to then face a marathon trial.

The case was prepared by our Head of Serious Crime, Matt Corn, who instructed Richard Butcher of Lincoln House Chambers as Counsel.

This case was doubly successful for Olliers, as we previously reported, in September that another of our clients was found not guilty at the halfway stage at the Judge’s direction when he concluded that there was no case to answer. Again, that client’s case was prepared by Matt Corn, who instructed Hugh Barton of Lincoln House Chambers who made the successful argument.
