Martin Foran, today, after 38 years of campaigning, has been successful in quashing his 1977 conviction for robbery at the Court of Appeal.
This fantastic result comes hot on the heels of Martin’s success in 2012 when his 1986 conviction, again for robbery, was also quashed.
Both appeals have centred on the credibility of investigating officers attached to the, now, notorious West Midlands Serious Crime Squad, disbanded in 1989, which, it has been found, promoted a ‘culture’ of conviction at any cost through any means necessary; including fabricated confessions, physical assault, concealed evidence and mishandling of informants.
Martin was convicted on four counts of robbery in 1977 at Birmingham Crown Court and was sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment; he has been protesting his innocence ever since and, in January 2014, his case was referred back to the Court of Appeal by the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC).
